Saturday saw the mighty Pilgrims play their final league game of the season in something of a dead rubber game with their place in Division 1 East secure for another season. The team could be forgiven for going through the motions, but against rivals Holcombe it’s never a game that we could down tools despite nothing being on the game other than pride.

In the opening half you would’ve been forgiven for thinking the Pilgrims were the side 3rd place in the league rather than their opponents. The men in green and white controlled the game, cutting through their defence like a hot knife through butter – Morgan Abbott the sharpest of the Pilgrim’s tools as he broke through the lines at will. It was just a shame that the skipper’s blade was rusty and blunt as he decided to fire a number of shots at the GK and test the strength of the bar (it’s strong, but perhaps a couple of inches too low).

0-0 at half time, all to play for. Holcombe came out in the second half with renewed vigour, and scored a breakaway goal to take an undeserved lead. In previous seasons heads might’ve dropped and the floodgates opened, but not with this crop of Pilgrims who have a never say die attitude. 10 minutes left, PC Pilgrims…up stepped veteran Keir to fire a trademark drag flick into the top corner to ensure points were shared.

An 8th place finish in the league this season for the Grims represents a strong 2026 following a lethargic 2025. We’ll be looking to hit the ground running next season and target those Champions League spots in the 26/27 season!
