Hope springs eternal; then so often on a Saturday gets dashed where the Friars are concerned and so it proved.
For 50 minutes the Friars held out, conceding, so our man -Moose- with the abacus reports 12 penalty corners in the 1st half. This increased by another 8 in the second and still SV could not get through Trigger but in the 50th minute a drag flick, not often seen at our lowly level in SE League Invicta Division 7 found the net. No more than 2 PCs did we gain and we only got into their D on half a dozen occasions. Our virtual manager Mr Phil D would not have been happy.
There was plenty of effort as there always is, but the basics of hockey passes, or indeed has passed, many of the Friars by, but we entertain. Guy Dowling inexplicably excused himself during the second half, left the pitch and disappeared off somewhere and returned wearing two different branded hockey shoes. Given that during the week he had well and truly stitched up your Scribbler with a brilliant April Fool’s joke of producing photos of all the shirt numbers falling off the pink and blue charity shirts, had Guy decided to become a social media influencer your reporter wondered? Anyway for his pains he was rewarded with Dick of The Day if not Week.
Back to the hockey and Jamie Harris never stopped working having had a sumptuous breakfast so he reported. More of that Jammers as it was like you had filled up with Jet Fuel and not bog standard E10. He deservedly got Man of the Match (for his hockey not his nutrition) and his 2 fellow Christ Church mates Lucas and Harry also put in good shifts. Another good shifter was Bert Andrews who always threatens with both effort and execution though not quite his day.
Merv couldn’t resist trying out his shoulder (his collar bone broke 6 weeks ago) for the second half but amazingly didn’t get a green card but then Phil was having a well deserved day off umpiring!
Many Thanks to Matt and Tyler for umpiring a good spirited and competitive game.
