With rain pouring down the Friars performed on the show pitch but with no crowd apart from one fan – Sue Bodi waving enthusiastically through the window! So the virtually non existent crowd missed what was one of the best performances of the season. For once the home team passed or at least tried to pass the ball to a green shirt from the very start & continued doing that for well, most of the match.

It seemed that Guy Dowling had had some potent Alco Pops for breakfast as his energy knew no bounds. Blackheath had a useful player in midfield & kept our promoted keeper (Mad Dog from The Squires) busy & with big unit Alex back again hitting his rockets the defence was watertight despite the water from above. The pressure began to tell on Blackheath – Bert Andrews hit powerfully into the D & John Boy Aikin got the faintest of feather touches caressing the ball as it whistled past him. So faint was John’s touch their keeper let the ball in as he thought no goal, but it was!

A halftime peroration (only one expletive!) from Mad Dog who said he had to give the half time chat as “I understand Trigger always does” & a very visible manager (in a shock blue dry robe) Phil with firm instructions to his forwards to upgrade. For once they remembered what he told them resulting in a dominating period bringing a 2nd goal from Aikin picking up on a ball from Hendo giving a 2 goal lead.

The last goal came from a run, if you can call it that from the Scribbler who, for once ran along the back line according to his manager’s instructions slipping it to John who got his hatrick. Much joy & happiness as this meant he had to buy a jug! Harry & Lucas were ever present in mid field & young Tim harried backs twice his size. Guy was everywhere & thoroughly deserved his man of the match award with honourable mentions to Lucas (again!) & also Alex and Mad Dog who was stoic in goal.

Thanks to Phil & Paino for whistling. Jonesy was 83 today though Blackheath said he was 84 which upset him!
