Over 55s Cup Match Report –
Canterbury vs Epsom (Again!)
We travelled through torrential rain to play our first game in the trophy competition but the weather cleared the moment the whistle blew. Excellent!
With a valiant squad of just 12 (luxury substitutions clearly overrated), we knew it was going to be a tough afternoon.
Epsom struck early with a goal that caused a little head-scratching, a bit of umpire conferencing, and some raised eyebrows—but after due process, the goal stood and play moved on.
To Canterbury’s credit, we more than held our own against a strong and well-drilled Epsom side. Grit, determination, and a refusal to lie down meant we went into half-time only one goal adrift and very much in the contest.
Ten minutes into the second half came the moment of magic. Following a foul on Sue on the halfway line, Julie G—also known as Lady G—entered the fray and promptly ran the entire remaining length of the pitch, beating three players (?) along the way before delivering a perfect cross. Ali, clearly appreciating fine service when she sees it, whacked the ball into the back of the net. The crowd went wild!
The rest of the match saw Canterbury battling hard, creating chances, and giving Epsom more than a few nervous moments. Sadly, it wasn’t quite enough on the day, but heads stayed high and effort never dropped.
So, while the Trophy journey ends here, spirits remain firmly intact and attention now turns to what promises to be a glorious and triumphant run in the Plate competition. Well played everyone!
