The swan song of the season for the lower 4 teams of the Men’s section plus some competitive ladies – the Peter Robins Tournament – was played on Saturday in lovely warm sunshine!
The teams were all very equal in ability if not in age, all the games being won by no more than a goal difference and with 2 draws. RESULTS:
10s -2 v Friars -0
Squires -1 v 7 s-1
Squires -0 v Friars -1
10s -1 v 7s -0
Friars – 0 v 7s -1
10s -1 v Squires -1
and THEREFORE POINTS:
10s – 7
7s – 4
Friars – 3
Squires – 2
All the games were played in great spirit, there was some excellent goal-keeping from Brad Lea, Ollie & Sam Holness and Artur Kravcenko and not a Trigger in sight! Nick Scott- K nearly scored his (one) goal of the season and didn’t but nearly got a green card instead with a hilarious stick-out-of-the-pram moment which fooled an umpire!
It was very encouraging to see the newest and youngest team at the Club – the 10s Development Team win the Trophy. Warm congratulations to their manager Michael Holness who has done so much to further their development this season and encourage them to play and enjoy their hockey. Incidentally they finished 2nd in their league.
Thanks so much to all the umpires, Phil, Stuart, Adam and Kevin the latter seeming quite keen to issue a card but didn’t! The teas were a veritable tour de force from Sue, Sally and Jude in the old style of coronation chicken and every other flavour sandwich for which many thanks. Thanks to Kevin for the excellent ale! Thanks to Tony Jones for organising the tournament in memory of Pete Robins, a long standing club stalwart who volunteered for everything. He had been a dedicated and loyal member of the Club since the early 1950s and tragically died playing hockey on Pitch 1 in 1991. So 34 years on we remember him as only our hockey family so often does. A total of £664 was raised which will be equally split between Club funds and the MS charity for which there is also a one off game on 10th May.
