Match Report: Canterbury Men’s 1st XI vs. Old Loughtonians

Canterbury Men’s 1st XI embarked on their final away fixture of the season at Old Loughtonians Hockey Club. The team had prepared diligently in training throughout the week and was eager to test themselves against their third-placed opponents.

The match commenced with Canterbury asserting early dominance, applying relentless pressure and demonstrating impressive work rate to secure an early advantage. The first quarter saw Canterbury controlling possession and limiting Old Loughtonians’ opportunities, yet the score remained 0-0 at the break.

As the second quarter began, Canterbury intensified their efforts. Louis Duprez was a formidable presence in midfield, disrupting opposition play effectively. In the 21st minute, Callum Brown-Lee’s incisive run along the baseline earned Canterbury their first penalty corner of the match. The ensuing set-piece lasted nearly five minutes, with the umpires repeatedly sending Old Loughtonians’ players back to the halfway line. Finally, Ben Young executed a precise flick from the top of the circle, placing the ball into the bottom right corner and giving Canterbury a well-deserved 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Canterbury maintained their disciplined approach, focusing on ball retention and robust defensive work to prevent Old Loughtonians from gaining any clear chances. Despite remaining on the front foot, Canterbury was unable to extend their lead.

The final quarter saw Old Loughtonians increase their intensity, knowing they had everything to play for. Canterbury remained resolute in defence, having not conceded a single penalty corner up to that point. However, in the 62nd minute, they conceded their first, which allowed Old Loughtonians to equalise. Despite Canterbury’s efforts to regroup and maintain high morale, the opposition continued to push forward.
