On a gloriously chilly yet sunny afternoon, the Canterbury Ladies Hockey team took to the field. Today, they faced off against the Maidstone squad, ready to fight tooth and nail for that elusive first draw of the season.
The first half was a fierce contest, with both teams showcasing remarkable defensive skills. Maddie, Ellie, and Lizzie were like a fortress at the back, making sure no stray Maidstone player snuck around with plans of a sneaky goal. The first half ended in a nail-biting, heart-pounding 0-0 stalemate that had all the excitement of watching paint dry— only with more running and a few more grunts.
As the second half began, the team’s spirits were high. However, luck took a dip faster than a clumsy penguin when Maidstone managed to wiggle their way around the goalkeeper. Cue collective gasps and despair from the Canterbury fans: 0-1 down!
In a moment reminiscent of a slapstick comedy, Ellie nearly earned herself an unexpected trip to the dentist after a spectacular collision with the goalpost.
But wait! Our hero emerges in the form of Maddie, who dazzled us with quick ball work and set Sue up for what was surely a gorgeous opportunity — only for Sue to narrowly miss, putting it wide.
Mimi was weaving through defenders with all the grace of a gazelle, while Kate Bod found herself in a mess sliding across the floor. As the action ramped up, Georgia was busy being a wall in goal, delivering saves that made her look like she had just signed a deal with the superhero league.
As the clock ticked down, Lizzie executed a fantastic long ball down the pitch to EJ, who relayed it to Chirpy. With all the finesse of a seasoned striker, Chirpy slotted the ball home to equalize at 1-1!
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more thrilling, Maidstone was awarded a short corner in the dying moments of the game. The tension could be cut with a butter knife. But fear not! Kate Boff was there to clear the ball, and the game wrapped up 1-1
