Another trip to SE London and yet another draw – that’s 6 out of 10 this season. Looking on the bright side though that means we have only had 2 losses in 10 !
On a bright afternoon at the HSBC Sports Ground we also started brightly landing up in their D within 30 seconds with Will Pattinson back from injury looking for an early goal.
We were meant to be 13 but only 12 arrived as Sir Geoff Philpott had been press ganged at a late hour into being Santa somewhere in Thanet for the afternoon (see pic). However Alex Ricketts made up for that loss with some hard hitting including one at a short corner that nearly took the leg off our skipper Jonesy which resulted him being at half pace for the rest of the game.
It was New Beccs though that took the lead from a sharp PC into the bottom left. However as usual we soon equalised from a dynamic run down the right from the energetic Pattinson who delivered a lovely cross for the waiting Barry Thomas to cross over the line.
Once again this was the limit of both teams’ scoring successes though unlike last week it was us that felt we should have got those extra 2 points as too many opportunities went begging from unrequited short corners that went wide, were saved, or were fluffed up.
There were some other bright sparks in the day. Kevin Pang had been flown in from Hong Kong and he certainly turned on the gas at many important moments. Another youngster Angus Solley also had a good shift and as ever Trigger in goal saved our bacon, whilst James Blackburn was always competing in left midfield. Dr Jolyon was Dr Jolyon he was amusingly heard to say “I want the ball on the end of my stick” which was a little out of the ancient Mansfield Jagger playbook, which did not go down too well with The Scribbler. Still Jolyon had a good shift as did the evergreen Barry Thomas who got both his eyes in this time on time! So another draw with some decent beer in the grand clubhouse afterwards. Thanks to Mike (Barton) & his Magic Fun Bus!
