Match Report: Indian Gymkhana vs. Canterbury – A Hard-Fought 4-3 Defeat

Canterbury’s Sunday game saw the boys travel away to West London, facing Indian Gymkhana. The day started off strong with a cute pre-match coffee meet at Gail’s waterside coffee shop. Highly recommend the smoked Salmon bagel!

First Quarter: Canterbury Takes the Lead, Gymkhana Responds

Canterbury made an assertive start, taking the lead with a well-taken goal to go 1-0 up. The visitors controlled much of the play in the quarter, but Indian Gym responded well. They found an equalizer late in the quarter, making it 1-1 just before the break.

Second Quarter: Gymkhana Surge Ahead

The second quarter saw Indian Gymkhana step up their game, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Canterbury struggled to break down their defense, and despite some strong individual efforts, we couldn’t convert our possession into goals.

Third Quarter: Boyne Pulls One Back, Gymkhana Retaliate

Canterbury came out strong in the third quarter. Craig Boyne pulled one back early, making it 3-2 and giving the Green and White army a renewed sense of hope. However, a couple of key moments shifted the game. Matthew Carney received a green card for a tactical breakdown of play, as well as Rhys Harmer for a controversial “kicking of a stick.” With Canterbury temporarily reduced to 10 players twice, Gymkhana took advantage, restoring their two-goal lead at 4-2.

Final Quarter: Late Push, But No Equalizer

In the final quarter, Canterbury pushed hard. Boyne turned provider, assisted Cal Brown-Lea to make it 4-3. The visitors had multiple penalty corner opportunities but couldn’t find the equalizer despite constant pressure. Gymkhana held out, and to their relief the final whistle blew with the score at 4-3.

Plenty of positives for the boys to take away from Sunday, and supplied with an exquisite post match curry before the journey home.
