The men’s 5s headed to picture-postcard Aylesford, to face new rivals K Sports Cobdown 1st XI. A hidden gem situated just outside Maidstone, with the River Medway gently meandering through, Aylesford boasts a historic stone footbridge leading to a Tudor village center, and has (very) recently been crowned the Ghent of Kent!
With Cobdown 9th in the league, and Canterbury 12th, the beautiful surroundings couldn’t distract from the crucial relegation battle ahead. Canterbury got off to a good start, and applied some early pressure, but Cobdown managed to find their hitman on the edge of the Canterbury D who hit the inside post with pin-point accuracy. Shortly afterwards, Cobdown were awarded a flick, but this was confidently brushed aside by Harrison Patching-Scott to leave it 1-0 at the break
Canterbury came out fighting in the second half, and Samuel Schuuring quickly equalised to bring the two sides level. Unfortunately, Cobdown were quick to reply scoring on the break and from a short-corner to put them 3-1 in front. The 5s have had a tough season, and although it would have been easy for heads to drop, Canterbury stepped it up a gear, with Hugo Fassum and Henry Goodwin flying up and down the wings, whilst Kyle delighted the opposition umpires with some 3D hockey. Confidence was buoyed when Danny Laslett hit home a brilliant short corner to narrow the gap to 3-2, but it was a composed Phil Jones flick that drew the two sides level and meant the fight to avoid relegation would continue into the following weekend.
