The Friars found themselves in pride of place on the AW1 show pitch in the glorious autumn sunshine to face old adversaries Holcombe Heroes. Some were perhaps daring to dream with memories of last week’s goalfest still recent. Would these dreams be crushed when meeting reality? Well yes actually – and quite rapidly!
The first ten minutes were all Holcombe with the usual suspects bolstered by talented and speedy youngsters.
However, the Friars defence (Biggles, Kevin G, Jamie H, David and Trigger of course) held firm and steadily through the first half the Friars made progress in what turned into a well matched and good natured duel.
Our own talented and speedy youngers – Hugo Fassum and Dominic Curtiss – put in assured performances, clearly undaunted by senior hockey.
Special mention also to our Hong Kong signing Kevin Pang who put in an energetic performance in the midfield.
Aikin suffered the great injustice of actually being marked this week, so no more goals for him, but does explain all his goals last week…
There was also a low point when our skipper took a nasty blow to the hand.
Despite a number of great saves from Trigger, the Friars’ goal was breached in the second half. And with none of our chances converted, it was thus back to earth with a bump for the Friars with the final score 1-0 to Holcombe Heroes at the close.
Thanks also to those Squires who boosted our numbers, and we look forward to our first league game next week.
