Many of us (well just three over 60s) were greeted with “glad to see you’re still alive – haven’t seen you since last season” especially to the skipper now in his 8th decade, looking very trim though in need of a haircut.
After the minute’s silence the game started quietly enough but was really a gentle goalfest or rather a gentle Aikin goalfest procession who started off his Golden Boot, sorry Stick, campaign in a tearing hurry. Good job as it turned out as joint favourite Mat Lea was out the blocks with 4 in his own Back to Hockey effort. So game on there now that Mat is happily back in harness hovering in the D!

Fantastic games from newbies Hugo Fassum and Sam Shuring who both scored goals. Another newbie in the frame was mature Shane Godwin – yes really – who nipped across from work as Friars were short. And also a warm up for him before the Grims match following. Apparently he enjoyed himself so much that he is looking for a transfer up to The Friars – shades of the great John Hinch when he played his first game for the Friars with the immortal words “I didn’t know the Friars ran so fast and played so well”. He stayed with us until he retired from active hockey!

Jamie Harris and Pete Neville were solid in the first line of defence with Trigger having a fairly quiet afternoon. Onwars to the next friendly.
